Unlike typical product work that responds to a defined problem, Transparent Video emerged from a unique opportunity: the ability to play MP4 files with an alpha channel- enabling true transparency- directly in the browser.
We saw the potential to redefine how motion content is experienced on the web. The vision was clear: to reimagine decorative motion on the web as a new component, one that combines the lightweight charm of GIFs with the quality and interactivity of video. The result was a first-in-market format: Transparent Video.
We designed a system that offered both a curated library and full creative freedom. Users could browse a rich catalog of transparent videos, optimized for modern web usage, or upload their own alpha-channel files and stream them seamlessly on any Wix site. In addition, we introduced the ability to recolor videos, allowing users to easily adapt motion assets to match their brand and site aesthetic.
RECOLOR PRESETS
One of the most powerful features of Transparent Video was recoloring- the ability to adapt video content to match a site’s brand identity.
At the technical foundation, we had two core color modes: Duotone and Hue/Saturation. These evolved into a full preset system, including Light Wash, Dark Wash, and Greyscale. The presets offered a broad tonal range while keeping the interface simple and accessible.

WIRED PRESETS
To ensure brand consistency, we wired the presets directly into Site Styles—offering an automated, visually coherent experience.
ADD COLORS
We also provided users with the option to edit video colors independently of the site style and adjust additional properties to ensure the video aligns with their site’s look and feel. This custom option was built on the initial presets we offered, allowing users to make further edits.

PROJECT GOALS
NEW UNIQUE CONTENT
We envisioned a product that retained the charm of GIFs while offering enhanced features such as high-quality resolution, recolor options, sound, and interactions, all aimed at setting a new standard in web content creation. Additionally, we wanted to provide users with a rich Transparent Videos library and the ability to upload their own videos with alpha channel to stream them on any Wix site as transparent.
DARK & LIGHT WASH
Behind the scenes, we used duotone coloring: in Dark Wash, we hid the black, and in Light Wash, we hid the white to create a seamless experience with the coloring options.
VISUAL MAPPING
The research into video coloring capabilities mapped out various styles of videos, considering their color schemes and aesthetics. This process helped define the default settings for recolored content, identify the range of editable options available to users, and establish the default palette colors for customization.

CURATION & CREATION
One of our primary initiatives centered around developing a specialized content library featuring videos designed to play seamlessly without a background. To achieve this, we collaborated with multiple creative teams within Wix as well as external animators and creative talents, leveraging their expertise to curate a collection of relevant and impactful content.
